What was it about them that stood out for you?

We had a lot of offers on the table to be honest. It started with Century Media and soon about seven other labels followed with in the weeks. It was almost like a snowball effect. In the end Metal Blade was the label that we felt like our sound and persona of the band best fit with AND they happened to give us the best offer, so it was definitely a win-win situation for us.

Why did WHITECHAPEL name the band after the inner city part of London? Are the members fascinated by Jack the Ripper or the WHITECHAPEL murders?

We just chose the name because it was short and to the point with a nice ring to it. It had a dark meaning behind it which fit our sound well, and we thought it was a cool concept. We werent really fascinated per se. Phil definitely had an interest in serial killers early on but not really fascinated or obsessed. Some of his favorite death metal bands are EXHUMED and IMPALED which both have very and serial killer themed lyrics, so that was an influence for him in the early material.

How is the metal scene in Knoxville, TN and TN in general? Is there a lot of competition?

There have only been two or thrww bands to really make it in the metal scene from Knoxville. Us, TEN YEARS, and DISCIPLE (a Christian band that was pretty big for a while). When we were growing up in the local scene there was definitely more local bands and local shows going on. Now that we are a national touring act and only play in Knoxville once a year or so the scene has definitely died. Kids dont put on DIY shows like they used to when we were growing in the scene. There is only one venue really for metal in Knoxville and its big and nice, but only big shows go there, theres not even really a place for local bands to play and gain a fan base anymore.

Who are some of your favorite bands to tour with? What has been WHITECHAPELs favorite tour so far?

A few of my favorite bands we have toured with are ARCHITECTS (UK), MESHUGGAH, THE ACACIA STRAIN, and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. Im sure there are more but those came to me first off the top of my head. Our favorite tour so far was probably the Rockstar Mayhem Festival tour in 2009. It was a huge tour for us- our first festival tour, first time in a bus, first mainstream tour outside of club tours. It was great; we had a blast and really hope we get to do it again.

How was being a part of Warped Tour this past summer? Generally Warped Tour is usually not a tour that showcases death metal. Was this a different experience for WHITECHAPEL?

It was very hectic and chaotic. You dont know what time you are playing every day until you wake up. The bands rotate time slots on the stages every day. It was a little odd being on a usually pop punk and rock tour, but this year we were joined by other metal bands like SUICIDE SILENCE, EMMURE, PARKWAY DRIVE, etc, so we didnt feel too out of place. We had a lot of friends on the tour so it made it a lot of fun as well. The shows were packed and insane every day, kids really took a liking to having metal on Warped Tour.

I noticed one of the members is named Ben Savage. I have to ask, is he a fan of Boy Meets World?

(Laughs) No he isnt, and hes been getting that joke his whole life. Savage is a pretty badass last name for a metal guitarist though

What, in your opinion, makes WHITECHAPEL stand out from all the other metal bands?

I feel like we have a little more in our sound if that makes sense. Ive heard us described as the thinking mans deathcore so take that as you will (laughs). We put a lot of emphasis on being heavy and brutal, but we try to do it in the most unique way possible, not just chugging away with redundant riff after riff. We just write metal, theres obviously a lot of influence from the death metal genre but I just consider us a metal band because we have influences spanning across the entire genre of metal.

Describe your sound for someone who has never heard WHITECHAPEL before?

Heavy, dark, brutal, progressive at times, relentless, etc. We take influence from all kinds of metal bands- BLOODBATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE, MESHUGGAH, DEFTONES, SLIPKNOT, DYING FETUS, MASTODON, etc.

What is the first time in your life you remember thinking, I want to be a musician?

I started out playing saxophone in band in 6th grade. Then my two best friends in 7th grade got guitars for their birthdays and they wanted me to get a bass so we could start a I got a bass for Christmas and learned a lot of METALLICA and BLINK 182 songs (laughs). Freshman year of high school I sold my bass and bought my first guitar from a pawnshop and have played guitar ever since.

Would you like to say anything to the fans?

Thank you for all of the support, it really means the world. And we have a big year coming up for 2011, including a yet announced headlining tour in February so keep your eyes peeled for when we are coming to your city!

From thediseased.com
Fri, 04 Feb 2011 14:25:00 -0800http://thediseased.com/news/23181The band is set to film the live music video for the track "Breeding Violence"!

Whitechapel hits Rocketown in Nashville, TN to record show for a live music video; support coming from The Tony Tap Dance Extravaganza

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. Its been like two years since weve done a headliner, so its been a really long time. The response has been overwhelming. The shows have been huge and we have a killer package Impending Doom, Miss May I, Oceano, and I Declare War. As I keep saying, my only regret is that I wish it was longer. Its only three weeks, so I wish it was longer than that.

F: Any more van break-downs with Oceano?

AW: No, thankfully. They had some problems and I Declare War had some problems. Our vans pretty much on its last legs, too, but I think were going to make it through the rest of this tour and its been fun.

F: How would you say the crowds are embracing the new songs from A New Era of Corruption?

Phil Bozeman: Theyre loving it. A lot of the fans that weve gained are coming from Warped Tour/Mayhem, and theyre more familiar with the newer stuff because thats how they heard about us. But still, people that have supported us from day one are still coming out. Theyve supported us from the first three albums. Every show has been killer. Kids are still singing along to the newer stuff and still obviously singing to the older stuff. I honestly couldnt be happier. I was kind of nervous to play some of the new stuff, because I was afraid people wouldnt accept it. You know, people know us for The Somatic Defilement and This Is Exile, but everybodys been accepting it and singing along.

AW: Its a big surprise for us to hear kids actually singing words to the new songs. We didnt think kids would know the words yet.

F: Youve been doing the wall of death at shows. Whats the craziest crowd youve seen on this tour?

AW: Its gotta be one of the smaller shows.

PB: Oh, Fort Lauderdale!

AW: It was pretty nuts.

PB: Yeah, everytime we go to south Florida, its always really good. Everything on this tour was east coast, and the furthest it went west was Milwaukee, I think. South Florida was really good. The weekend shows are always going to be better because kids are in school. The weeknights have still been awesome, but kids are more apt to come out on weekends because they dont have school the next day or anything.

F: Youre one of the few bands with three guitar players. Does that get tough on stage?

AW: Sometimes, but over the years, weve learned how to handle it. Sometimes it can get a little cramped as far as room goes. Sometimes, Zach has a lot of problems because he plays in the center and sometimes he cant get his guitar in his monitor and stuff like that. So its kind of hard for him to hear sometimes. Usually, were able to work around stuff like that. I feel like it still benefits us.

F: What about in the studio? Do you have a tough time writing parts around each other?

AW: I feel like it kind of helps because its one more person adding riffs. Thats that much more material that can then be put into the album, so I think it definitely helps in the studio.

F: Where does the writing start most of the time?

AW: It definintely starts with single guitar players going off on their own and writing. We all have our little computer rigs with Line6 Pods, and we record to drum machines, and we record different riffs. We show each other the ideas and whoevers ideas they like the most, we form into songs. We tried the whole writing together in a room stuff, and its just a bunch of obnoxious noise. Nobody ever knows when to shut up and listen, so it definitely works a lot better writing songs digitally on the computer.

F: The new album reached #43 on Billboards Top 200 chart, #2 on Hard Music Core Stores chart, #3 on Independent Albums chart, and #35 on Hard Music Albums chart. This doubled the first week sales of your last record, This Is Exile. Are you guys happy with those positions and with working with Jason Suecof on this record?

PB: Oh yeah, definitely. If you progress from the last album, thats what you want. Thats exactly what happened. I wasnt personally exepecting it to turn out as good as it did, but working with Jason Suecof definitely helped us find our sound. He had a lot of good ideas and a lot of input on the album. We didnt use every single idea he had, but he definitely helped us out and he actually worked with us as a producer instead of someone that just records your album. It definitely helps to have an outside opinion on the album. Im super stoked on the album. Im super stoked on how people are accepting it, and hopefully the next albums better.

F: For The Somatic Defilement, the lyrics essentially dealt with a day in the life of Jack the Ripper. On This Is Exile, they dealt more with anti-politcal and religious themes. On A New Era of Corruption, its all about living in a corrupted world and the world getting worse. Do you feel this is your strongest content?

PB: It definitely gets across a message that some people arent going to believe, some people are going to believe, and some are going to give us their opinion on it. The first album was definitely about murder along the lines of Jack the Ripper, but now weve developed. That was kind of the idea when we first came to be as a band, and weve kind of progressed from that. I just like to write about different stuff. If you write the same CD and the same lyrics, youre coming up with new music, but lyrically its not progressing. The fans want to hear different stuff. They dont want to hear the same CD over and over again.

F: Right. That works for Rascal Flatts, or whoevers up on these billboards around town here, but not for a metal band.

PB: Yeah, for sure. It works for certain genres, but definitely not metal. They want to hear something different for each album and you want to progress as a band.

F: Were there any songs that didnt make the record that will be released later?

AW: There were some songs that didnt make the record, but they didnt make the record because we felt like they werent ready, so I dont that they are going to be released anytime soon. They could potentially turn into future material if we re-work them or put some riffs into a different song.

F: How long did the studio process take this time for A New Era of Corruption?

AW: It was supposed to be a month, but we actually got it done around three weeks. It went way faster than we thought it would. It took about three weeks to record This Is Exile, but the last day we were there, we were still recording bass and stuff. It was down to the wire. We just barely go that one finished in the allotted amount of time that we had. This one, it was like Well, its been three weeks. We were supposed to stay four, but were done, so I guess were just gonna go. We just left and we let Jason do his thing and he started mixing. It was good because hes a busy producer, so it gave him a chance to jump on the mix earlier and spend more time on the mix rather than having to rush through it.

PB: It seemed like it took a lot longer. When we were recording the progression of it, it seemed like it was going to take forever, but somehow it didnt take nearly as long.

AW: I think the guitars just went super fast. Way faster than usual. Because the drums were taking awhile, we were kind of like Man, this is taking forever, were going to be here so long. And then all of a sudden its just like, Wait, the albums done! I think that once the drums were done, the guitars just blazed through and then Phil, hes really quick with laying down his vocals. He doesnt need very many takes and shit like that, so it ended up getting done a lot faster.

F: You guys started off in the Tennessee metal scene. Is the hometown crowd here still your biggest crowd?

AW: Yeah, this is definitely the biggest show of this tour and, honestly, probably the biggest headliner weve ever played, to my knowledge. Weve played one in our actual hometown of Knoxville and it was like 800 kids or something like that, and tonight, before doors even opened, presale was at 730. Were thinking theres going to be around 1,000 kids here tonight, so its going to be a monumental thing for us.

F: Coming from the Tennessee metal scene, what type of scene would you describe it as?

AW: I feel like theres more of a scene in Nashville than in Knoxville. Im not dissing our hometown or anything like that. Nashvilles just the music capital of the United States, in my opinion. Its primarily country here, but still I feel like theres more kids going to shows, theres more bands, theres just more ways to get involved in the metal scene here. In Knoxville, its very bare-bones its very dry. Theres only one venue there and, honestly, locals dont really play there. Its just national acts. So its really hard for bands to break out and make it from Knoxville.

F: Are there any bands youve seen from when you were local that you want to see break out and make it?

AW: Not really. It kind of sucks, because most of the local bands that we know have broken up by now. All of the local bands that we were playing with back when we were a local band arent even bands anymore. Thats definitely the bum-out. I guess if you cant get that hype going and break out, and make a name for yourself, you just have to kind of let it die.

F: How long did it take for Whitechapel to make it onto a national level?

AW: About two years, really.

PB: You constantly progress. Every tour you do, you feel like youre getting more and more exposure. Thats what we were doing. Wed start going out doing DIY tours and we eventually got out and got people to work for us, to help us get on bigger tours and more higher-scale tours. From there, it seems like its kind of blown up. Whenever youre a DIY band like that, its hard to get a tour in general unless you just do it yourself. It took about like you said, about two years.

AW: The band formed in 2006 and we started touring in 2007. We were touring nationally all over the states so it was about a year or two years. We got signed within about a year and a half of being a band. We signed to Metal Blade, and once that happened, it was just all up from there.

F: Is it a pretty happy relationship with Metal Blade?

AW & PB: Very.

AW: Definitely, very happy. I wouldnt want to be on any other label, so Im pretty happy.

F: Do you have any advice for bands wanting to break out of the local mold?

AW: Do something different. In a sense, you watch bands that you idolize and you can take notes from them and think, Well this bands doing this and theyre popular, so maybe we should try something of the same, but in the same breath, if youre just a copycat of something else thats already out, people are going to say, Oh well you sound like blah blah blah. When we first started, everybody was just like, You guys just sound like Suicide Silence, blah blah blah, and now, by our third album, we sound nothing like them. I feel like to really break out and set yourselves apart, youve got to do something different. Youve got to take a professional attitude towards being in the band. You cant just get up there looking like you rolled out of bed and put your guitar on and expect someone to take you seriously.

F: Now for some kind of random questions. If you could tour with any band for your dream tour, who would it be?

AW & PB: Slipknot. No question

AW: I doubt it will happen now because of the Paul Gray incident, but I wouldve absolutely loved to have toured with Slipknot.

F: Favorite food on tour?

AW: In-N-Out, from the west coast.

PB: Yes.

AW: These east coast people, they dont know about the In-N-Out unless they travel over there, but its definitely one of the best burgers Ive ever put in my mouth.

PB: Definitely, for me.

F: Favorite hobby on tour while waiting around?

PB: (laughs) Were kind of lame, honestly. We dont really do anything.

AW: Yeah, were a real lame band. Everybody thinks we party and all that shit. A couple guys drink here and there, but nobody does hard drugs. Nobodys an alcoholic. Its not the Motley Crue life everybody thinks it is. Its a lot of time in the van. Its a lot of time with headphones and an iPod and stuff like that. Downtime is usually getting on the internet. Ive kind of taken up videography a bit around the tour, recording stuff and other bands and stuff like that. Random stuff here and there.

F: What kind of music, other than metal, do you listen to?

PB: Rock. Deftones, a lot. I dont listen to the most metal, probably. Zach (Householder, guitarist) blasts the most brutal things at 9:30 AM. (AW laughs) Mainly rock and easy listening stuff - stuff thats easy on the ears. Once you play metal, you just dont really want to listen to it all the time.

AW: I definitely prefer listening to rock and shit like that because I enjoy playing metal because of the intensity, but you can only take blast beats for so long. They numb your brain you just go crazy. I like bands like Alexisonfire, Jimmy Eat World, and chill rock bands like that.

F: On the flip side of the coin, what metal bands are you into right now?

PB: Metal bands? Its hard to tell, because I try not to turn on too much metal. The guys in I Declare War, Ill listen to them or the Acacia Strain a lot.

AW: Meshuggah.

PB: Yeah, Meshuggah. Its so hard to think of who I actually listen to.

AW: Death metal I dont listen to a whole lot of death metal, which is funny, being in a death metal band. The one death metal band that I do actually like a lot is Bloodbath. Theres definitely a lot of metal we listen to, but you just cant listen to metal and play metal. Its kind of too much metal. Some people say you can never have too much metal, but I definitely disagree with that. (laughs)

F: You mentioned Deftones and The Acacia Strain. Chino (Moreno) from Deftones and Vincent (Bennett) from The Acacia Strain were both guests on the new record, so what was it like working with them in the studio?

PB: We kind of showed them both what to do and they did it. There wasnt too much interaction between them. I talk to Vincent outside of touring and what not, so I had more contact with him. I just told him, you know, This is a line, Ill do the line and well just take it out and put your voice in it. Chino, its more like a s the idea. Heres what Phil would do. You can take it and do it however you want. Our manager knows him. They live in the Sacramento area, so thats basically how that worked. The only time we ever talked to him and actually talked about it was when we went to the Golden Gods (awards). We actually met him there and he basically just took it and ran with it. We had a lot of faith in Chino. Hes been doing this for years, so he can easily listen to it and just do what he does best.

AW: Yeah, he sent it to us and we were just like, Alright! Thats good! Move on!

F: Any last things youd like to say to the readers on MetalUnderground.com?

AW: Thanks for the support. The result is a high-speed collision of bodies that makes regular moshing seem almost quaint. Its exciting, it can be dangerous, and on this years Warped Tour, its the perfect accompaniment to the extreme sonic violence meted out by the breakout bands dominating the festival lovingly nicknamed Punk-Rock Summer Camp.

Check out the full article on Here on www.altpress.com

From thediseased.com
Tue, 20 Jul 2010 16:35:00 -0700http://thediseased.com/news/12199Welcome!

To the new Whitechapel official Fan Club!..Enjoy it because it enjoys you!

- Melting faces

From thediseased.com
Thu, 15 Jul 2010 12:00:00 -0700http://thediseased.com/news/12047Catch us on Warped 2010

Hey! "The album is finally 100% complete and we couldn't be more excited. I think this record truly represents where we are as musicians at this point in our career. A New Era of Corruption is the heaviest and most aggressive material we have written to date," comments guitarist and founding member Alex Wade. Alex continues: "Some of you may notice that the title of the new record, A New Era of Corruption, is a line from the song 'Possession' off of our last album This Is Exile. We wanted to name the CD this to bring a little flavor from 'This Is Exile' into the new CD, as well as I think the name represents this new age of extreme metal that we are currently rising in. The album is not a concept record like This Is Exile was. It just has its own general theme and each song deals with its own topic track by track."

Track listing:

01. "Brent handled the artwork for the record and absolutely nailed it. The dark and ominous vibe he portrayed with his art fits the mood of the CD perfectly," states Alex.

A New Era of Corruption features guest vocals fromVincent Bennettof The Acacia Strain on the track "Murder Sermon" andChino Morenofrom the Deftones on the track "Reprogrammed to Hate." Alex elaborates: "Vincent has been a long time friend of the band and we have always talked about him doing guest vocals on one of our records, so naturally his style of vocals fits our music perfectly and sounds great. We're honored to have Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno on our record. All of us are huge Deftones fans so it's pretty surreal for us. He absolutely killed his part on the album and it's everything I envisioned it would be. Plus it's cool that Chino was so opened minded to do vocals on something so extreme; I think that it sounds fantastic."

In support of the upcoming release of A New Era of Corruption, Whitechapel is hitting the road to play about 30 dates, most of which are with labelmates Job for a Cowboy and Cattle Decapitation including stops at the New England Metal & Hardcore fest and the California Metal fest. Then come the summer, Whitechapel will be on the road as a part of the Vans Warped Tour Twenty Ten.

"We have some killer tours coming up in support of the new record, the first one being with Job For A Cowboy and the second one being Vans Warped Tour. The JFAC tour will be cool as it will be in smaller rooms with a more intimate setting with the fans. This is something we haven't done in a very long time so it will be awesome to go back and do some shows like that. Then we will be doing the complete opposite and playing to thousands of people a day on the Vans Warped Tour so we are very excited and honored to be a part of that."

Last but certainly not least, Whitechapel is set to film their first music video for the track "The Darkest Day of Man" off of A New Era of Corruption. The band will once again be working with famed metal video directorDavid Brodskyof MyGoodEye and will be shooting in April. Suecof has produced some of the most brutal metal albums to date and we are excited for him to get his hands on our new material to make it the heaviest music we've created thus far.

Also,Dusty Petersonhas been signed on to handle the artwork duties. His dark, yet meticulously detailed style of hand drawn artwork is sure to bring out a truly vivid and brutal masterpiece. We really wanted our artwork for the record to speak as loudly for us as the music we are creating, thus, Dusty was picked for his unbelievably realistic and detailed hand drawn style. In this day and age where downloading a CD is as easy as typing the cd's name into a search bar, we wanted to make the artwork something creative and special for the fans who actually purchase the CD. Almost like owning a piece of art.

As for the title and tracklisting, you'll just have to wait for that as the CD comes closer to completion."

This is Exile was unleashed on July 8th, 2008, and debuted at #118 on the Billboard top 200 charts, #2 on Billboards Top Heatseekers, and #14 on Billboards Top Independent albums.
